Scotland is justly famed as a land of colour and romance, but its image - in the eyes of the outsider - is often one of cliches. Tartans and mountains, lochs, gloomy castles and humble crofts make up the Scotland of the tourist brochures. Yet while these have their place in the total fabric, Scotland from the inside offers a tapestry of infinite variety, unexpected and continually dazzling. This splendid book looks behind the facades of the great houses, small castles and inner-city dwellings. With the exception of the architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh's masterpiece at Helensburgh, now owned by the National Trust for Scotland, all the properties featured in this book at the time of publication were private homes. The result is a fascinating insight into Scottish treasures and tastes, photographed by Fritz von der Schulenburg with all his well-known flair and discrimination. The accumulated styles range from the traditional to the modern, encompassing all those features that are unique to the Scottish way of life. |
